We are out and about in the community! Because suicide and mental health impact every demographic (Veterans, Youth, First Responders, Teachers, Health Care Workers) opportunities abound. Check out what we've been doing as well as upcoming events.
SEPTEMBER 11
Together We Serve 2ndBattalion 14th Marine Regiment Resource Fair at the Grand Prairie Armed Forces Reserve Complex, members Veronica Sites and Shirley Weddle staffed the SPBH Rotary eClub table.
Member Domingo Rodriguez was one of the event organizers and also represented his organizations Military Veteran Peer Network and Cohen Clinic/Metrocare.
The more than 300 attendees included current Military members, Veterans, first responders, healthcare workers and their family members currently serving out of the Grand Prairie Complex. Additional representatives from 34 resource organizations were also present.
SEPTEMBER 17
Together We Serve Resource Fair for 5 Army Reserve units and their families, member Shirley Weddle staffed the SPBH Rotary eClub table. Member Robin Kiplinger provided pre-event assistance and members Charlynn Johns and Domingo Rodriguez (also event organizer) attended to represent each of their organizations, StopOne, Military Veteran Peer Network, Cohen Clinic/Metrocare.
It was reported that there were 896 attendees plus representatives from 63 resource organizations and 12 employers. Tony Dickensheets of Soldiers Angels completed an application to join our club that day! Welcome Tony!
SEPTEMBER 21
Grant Halliburton Foundation's annual “When Life Hands You Teenagers” conference, the SPBH Rotary eClub was a sponsor plus we provided information at our resource table staffed by members Shelley Craig and Shirley Weddle for the 385 registered attendees and multiple vendor organizations.
SPBH eClub members Kevin Hall and Lindsey Encinias of the Halliburton Foundation supported the event and its organization.
SEPTEMBER 22
Members Shelley Craig and Shirley Weddle staffed the SPBH Rotary eClub resource table for the Dallas College Veterans Services “Mental Health for Veterans” full day event at the Richland College campus. Shelley also staffed the resource table for her organization Faith and Grief while member Tanya Mac staffed the Cohen Clinic/Metrocare resource table.
The event was live streamed to all Dallas college campuses. In addition to connecting with in-person attendees, we also had the opportunity to share about the SPBH Rotary eClub as part of the livestream to all Dallas College campuses. Multiple dual credit high school students expressed interest in Rotary in addition to the other college students.
SEPTEMBER 24
At the Tyler American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Awareness Walk, members Terri Hartman and Sam Vanderburg participated in and staffed our SPBH Rotary eClub table.
In addition to sharing resources with the almost 500 attendees, Terri and Sam provided opportunities to create “Memory Message Rocks” to be added to the 140 painted rocks in our club’s area on the Parr Park Rock Art Trail in Grapevine.
SEPTEMBER 28
The SPBH Rotary eClub resource table at the VA North Texas Veterans Resource Fair at the VA Medical Center in Dallas on September 28 was staffed by members Sam Vanderburg and Shirley Weddle.
There were approximately 300 attendees. Members Charlynn Johns and Domingo Rodriguez were also present to staff and represent their organizations StopOne, MVPN, Cohen Clinic/Metrocare.
SEPTEMBER 29
Member Shirley Weddle attended the Greater Dallas Suicide Prevention Coalition Suicide Awareness Event sponsored by Dallas County Commissioner Dr. Theresa Daniels at the Dallas Records Building.
Shirley met Dr. Daniels and talked with her staff about collaborating with our Rotary eClub.
SEPTEMBER 30
During the Greater Dallas Veterans Foundation Inaugural Symposium on Mental Health, member Domingo Rodriguez served as a panelist and member Shirley Weddle staffed our SPBH Rotary eClub resource table.
Members Charlynn Johns, Tanya Mac and Domingo Rodriguez also supported our club and represented their organizations StopOne, Cohen Clinic/Metrocare and Military Veterans Peer Network. Multiple Veterans were recognized and honored. Presenters and panelists from the DFW area discussed Mental Health Care access, Veteran support and Suicide Prevention in relation to communities, education, health, and governmental organizations.
Guests also included local media persons Brad Watkins and Scott Murray as well as Tony Orlando who shared his story and performed “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Around the Old Oak Tree” for the attendees. The SPBH Rotary eClub plans to assist and support organizers with the upcoming conference in April 2023 and promote the National Archives Project to record stories of Vietnam, Korean and WWII Veterans.
